Steven Barrett Obituary

Steven C. Barrett, a respected father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on March 16, 1952, in Linton, Indiana, to Norma Jean (Wagner) Barrett and William Barrett, Jr., Steve's life was one marked by passion, dedication, and the love for his family and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Norma Jean and William Barrett, Jr., and his brother, Bruce Barrett. His memory will be treasured and kept alive by his loving children, Shannon Barrett and Lisa Barrett Nocus, Lisa’s husband Shane, and Steve’s grandchildren: Graylin, Reagan, Kayla, Kendall, Corban, Ashlyn, and Caleb Nocus. He is also survived by his brother, Randall Barrett, and his wife, Theresia Barrett.

After completing his technical education, Steve embarked on a mechanical career, retiring from Duke Energy. However, it was outside the workplace that Steve truly found his calling.

Steve has always had a love for horses, which grew to a passion for Extreme Cowboy Racing. His skill and dedication to the sport earned him over seven National Championships and 14 World Championships. His talents were recognized on an international level as he was invited to compete at the prestigious Calgary Stampede multiple times. Steve's love for the sport was not just about the competition; he was also deeply involved in the community of the sport, helping others learn to ride and trail riding.

In addition to his equestrian pursuits, Steve had a profound love for antique tractors. He spent countless hours restoring old tractors and attending tractor pulls. His hands-on approach and attention to detail in restoration were a testament to his patience and skill.

Steve's commitment to his community was evident through his long-standing role as a 4-H leader for the Knox County Horse and Pony Club. His guidance and mentorship shaped the lives of many young individuals, instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of giving back to the community.

As a respected member of the Extreme Cowboy Association (EXCA), the Southern Obstacle Course Association (SOCA), and the Ultimate Horseman Challenge Association (UHCA),  Steve's influence and contributions to the sport were significant. Known as “Speedy Steve” his presence at events and competitions will be greatly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who share his love for the equestrian world.

When Steve wasn’t training or competing, he adored being with his grandchildren, playing games with them, working with them, and falling asleep watching movies with them.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Steve Barrett will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the community he served, and the family he loved so dearly. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his journey was full of purpose, love, and incredible achievements. He lived life to the fullest.
